Conclusion
Sexting Is an epidemic that is everywhere. Kids as young as 4th grade have been reported sexting (Eraker). Although we can lecture our kids, try and teach them right from wrong, and tell them the consequences for certain actions, they will still do it. Children and teens do not have a fully formed brain yet, and the last part to develop is the frontal lobe, in which we are able to understand the consequences of the actions we choose (Boucek). Therefore, just like teens are going to continue having sex, they are going to continue sexting. The laws need to be modernized. They should make consequences, but send them to classes and educate. There is no reason to be lumped in with the true pedophiles and sex offenders and ruin a teens life for a dumb choice. It will only force them away from school, and down the wrong path in life to be a non-contributing member of society. Texas is a great example of what kind of laws they have started to pass in order to deal with this particular issue. As of September 1, 2011, a minor caught sexting in Texas can be charged with a misdemeanor. However, if a minor is caught, the minor and one of his or her parents will be required to take a State sponsored sexting education class. Under the bill the minor’s conviction can be expunged upon the minor turning 18(U.S. Sexting Laws and Regulations).
